Millville Historical Society History

|
The Millville Historical Society was founded February 9, 1984. Charter officers were: President, Flora Pearson; Vice-president, Don Cannon; Treasurer, Doris Mann; Corresponding Secretary, Pat Miranda; Recording Secretary, Gale Reich; Historian, Elsie Robertson; Auditor, and Betty Bryant. In 1984 the Historical Society acquired the Ellis one-room school house and moved it to a new site next to the Millville Fire Hall, where it has been restored for use as a museum and meeting place. Prior to that time, it had been moved from South Cow Creek in 1957 by the Millville School District for use as a kindergarten classroom, and it was also used by a church. The building was first placed near the Masonic Lodge. When the new Millville School was built and the old school building was no longer needed, the Millville Fire Department used it for storage. Currently, the Society meets at 9:30 a.m. at the Ellis school house on the third Thursday of every month, except for November and December, and the museum is open for research by appointment. Meetings frequently include speakers and presentations about the area's Native Americans and early settlers, and there are field trips to local historical sites of interest. The public is always welcome to attend. The Historical Society has placed historical markers at all the old school house sites and roadside markers for graves and cemeteries on public and private property. It also fenced in the Josephine Cemetery in Whitmore, and placed three new bronze markers at the Allen Cemetery.
